YCONS Feature: Ethel Cota

YCONS are very simply Y icons. They are the people—staff, members, volunteers, donors, partners—who have helped make our Y what it is today. Follow along as we highlight some of our YCONS here at the Merrimack Valley YMCA.

If you would like to nominate someone to be a YCON, please send an email to marketing@mvymca.org.

Ethel Cota

1. What brought you to the Y, and what keeps you coming back?

I arrived in Andover nearly five years ago after leaving Mexico. It was a huge change because I had led a very active life back home: I worked as a microbiology professor, was surrounded by family and friends, and had an established community. When I arrived here, I was looking for a way to stay physically active, as exercise has always been one of my passions.

What I found at the Y was much more than just a place to work out. I found friendship, support, and a community; here, I feel welcome, motivated, and connected to people who have enriched my life.

2. If you could describe the Y in a single word, what would it be and why?

Connection

Because the Y connected me with what I’ve always been passionate about—exercise—but it also connected me with incredible people, new friendships, and a diverse community.

3. What is the most unexpected connection you’ve made at the Y?

Without a doubt, my friendship with Janeth. We met at the Y and discovered that we are both from Mexico—from the same state and the same city. Our children are very close in age. It was an incredible coincidence. What started as a casual conversation turned into a very important friendship for both families.

4. How does the Y help you build community?

The Y creates spaces where people can get to know each other naturally. Through classes, workouts, and activities, I have had the opportunity to connect with people from different countries and cultures. It has helped me build genuine friendships and feel integrated into the local community.

5. What does your typical trip to the Y look like?

Normally, I arrive full of enthusiasm. I greet the people I already know and then begin my workout routine or join a group exercise class. I enjoy the conversations, the smiles, and the laughter shared amongst friends. What I love most is that I never feel like I’m coming here just to train; I feel like I’m coming to a place where I belong, a place where I can spend time with a community that inspires me.

I came looking for a gym, but I found a community.
