Power Up Session 1: Building Healthy Habits and Confidence
Power Up Session 1, generously supported by a grant from the New Balance Foundation, marked an exciting milestone as we completed our first pilot cohort: an 8-week program designed to help children build healthy habits through structured lessons and physical activity. The program served 16 participants, ages 8–10, from our Lawrence YMCA childcare community.
Throughout the session, children engaged in regular physical activity, interactive learning, and reflective activities focused on overall well-being. A standout moment was the graduation event last week, where each participant shared their experience on stage in front of family, staff, and peers — showcasing growth, pride, and confidence.
Throughout the program, participants explored key areas of health, including:
- Physical activity: Learning the FITT principle (frequency, intensity, time, and type) while building stamina, confidence, and daily movement habits
- Nutrition: Understanding balanced eating, reading nutrition labels, and making informed food choices
- Sleep: Recognizing the importance of rest, routines, and healthy daily habits that support better sleep
- Stress management: Practicing techniques like breathing exercises and creating personalized “Calm Plans”
As a pilot, this first session provided valuable insights to strengthen future programming. Most importantly, it demonstrated the impact of creating a supportive space where young people can grow, learn, and feel a sense of belonging.
We’re excited to build on this success. Our next session launches in mid-April with 25 participants, and a new partnership with Merrimack College to measure program impact through data and evaluation.
