On Tuesday, June 3, the Kraft Family and New England Patriots Foundation celebrated the 2025 Myra Kraft Community MVP Award Winners. They recognized 26 volunteers for their contributions to the New England community at an awards ceremony at Gillette Stadium. Marilyn Fitzgerald of Andover, Massachusetts was recognized as one of this year’s honorees and presented with a $10,000 donation for the Merrimack Valley YMCA.

“Receiving The Myra Kraft Community MVP Award is beyond humbling and most certainly the pinnacle of volunteer recognition. We were both born in 1942 and our generation learned through our parents how to help each other. Myra’s philanthropy and commitment to helping others was and still is as legendary as the team that plays here. She set the bar high and those of us being honored today will continue to do our best to reach our greatest height,” said Marilyn. “I started volunteering as a very young girl but I didn’t really know that was what I was doing as I would go with my dad when he was helping a neighbor, friend or relative who was in need of his expertise or manpower. I would go with my mom as she delivered her homemade goodies to someone who could use a boost. The seeds were planted early for me to always offer to help. I cannot remember a time when my parents weren’t giving of their time, talent and often their treasure to their church, community, friends and family. I learned from the very best that it is always better to give than receive.”

Since 1970, Marilyn has dedicated her time to the Merrimack Valley YMCA in a variety of roles including a program promoter, aquatics volunteer and member of the board of directors. She became the first female chair of the board and has continued to be a mentor to volunteers. Marilyn now oversees a team of 20 board members and serves on several committees within the organization to provide assistance to those they serve.

“My relationship with The Merrimack Valley YMCA began as a young mom while waiting in a line to sign my son up for floor hockey. A woman stood at the top of the stairs and asked the group if there was anyone who could help fold some flyers. I raised my hand and thus began a fifty-five year journey that is still unfolding. I have been ringside to witness the impact The Y has has on individuals, families, the communities at-large, employees and volunteers who found their calling through The Y,” said Marilyn. “The Y nurtured my developing talents and every step of the way, I have felt valued. My family is now celebrating four generations of being involved in The Y Camping Services Program and I am ever so grateful for being asked to fold flyers on that day fifty-five years ago.”

More than just a leader, Marilyn has been a mentor and role model, sharing her experience and wisdom with YMCA leadership. She has always prioritized developing the next generation of leaders, ensuring they carry forward her passion for service. Her ability to inspire and recruit volunteers has been instrumental in strengthening the YMCA’s network of supporters. She leads by example, demonstrating that service is not just about giving time – it’s about creating a lasting impact.

Even during difficult times, Marilyn never wavered in her commitment to the YMCA. For more than half a century, she has poured her heart into serving the community. She is more than just a volunteer – she is a symbol of resilience, generosity, and the true spirit of community.
