Members of the YMCA’s Teen Achievers group got the chance to learn about the court system and what it’s like to be a judge from special guest Judge Mark Newman recently. Judge Newman of the Essex County Juvenile Court attended a meeting of the Teen Achievers at the Lawrence YMCA to talk about his career path and why he wanted to become a judge. He also talked about his role in the justice system and how he works to help every young person who comes before him. Judge Newman explained a judge’s careful consideration of whether someone needs a second chance or punishment is necessary. This visit was a great experience for the group, which is a teen leadership program through the Lawrence YMCA that is open to kids ages 13-18. For more information on joining, visit our Teen Achievers page.
Discussions with Judge Newman included current issues in the school system and the community, including school shootings and school suspensions. Judge Newman is very active in the community on behalf of young people and is also a regular at the YMCA. Thanks, Judge Newman for sharing your wisdom with the Teen Achievers!
